In many work situations, there is uncertainty when dealing with unfamiliar lifestyles, backgrounds, languages, values, or worldviews. Language barriers further complicate collaboration or, in the case of customers, make service provision more complex and unfamiliar.

The development of intercultural and diversity-oriented competencies therefore includes both social and communication skills. As part of training programs, employees are to be prepared for dealing with cross-cultural situations and sensitized to interacting with people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds through the acquisition of intercultural and diversity-related competencies.
